How insane is it that Chaz Bono should have to reassure anyone that his appearance on Dancing with the Stars won’t endanger anyone’s sexuality or “confuse children” in some damaging way?

Want to be incensed further about the indignities he has to suffer because people just don’t get it?  Check out this Time Magazine interview from May.  Reporter’s first question: “Are you nuts?”  Seriously, Time Magazine.

Chaz: You won’t get gender dysphoria watching me on ‘DWTS’

Chaz Bono said that despite all the controversy swirling around his participation on “DWTS,” he’s not really paying much attention to it.

The American Family Association — as well as some “Dancing With the Stars” fans and Clicker readers — think that casting Chaz Bono, the transgender son of Cher and Sonny Bono, is a bad move that means the ballroom bash is no longer family friendly. But the soft-shoe in training disagrees.

“I’m going to be dancing. I’m not up there talking about anything other than dancing,” Bono said Tuesday morning on “Good Morning America.” “People who don’t have gender dysphoria aren’t going to catch it by watching me dance on television.”

He insisted that though people may focus on the transgender issue, he won’t be going near the topic. “It’s a dancing show, you know!” Bono said. “I’ve gone on many talk shows and talked about transgender issues … but actually on this show, I’m just going to be dancing!”

As to the AFA’s claims that his participation on the show will be “very confusing for children,” Bono told “GMA’s” George Stephanopoulos that “it’s just crazy.”

And from the L.A. Times blog:

He wants America to see “that I’m just a regular guy. All these ideas of, ‘Children shouldn’t watch me, I’m going to be confusing,’ … it’s crazy.” That said, “it would have made all the difference in the world in my life” had he seen a show like this, featuring someone like him, when he was growing up as Chastity Bono.

Chaz, born the daughter of Cher and the late Sonny Bono, started the gender reassignment process in March 2009, legally becoming a man in May 2010.

Bono’s inclusion in the cast has sparked criticism from various corners plus calls to boycott “DWTS.” It also appears to have distracted folks from the notion that producers considered pairing “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’s” Carson Kressley with a male dancer and the fact that contestant Elisabetta Canalis shacked up out of wedlock with George Clooney for years. Don’t even get us started on David Arquette.
