It’s been a while since I’ve watched an American soap on a regular basis, having basically quit when One Life to Live unceremoniously wrote out their gay supercouple Fish.  (Regular viewers will know what I am talking about.)  Anyway, with the impending move of the sudser from ABC to online, the show is making some interesting additions.

Joining resident bad boy Vimal Patel (Julliard-trained Nick Choksi) and his wife, Rama, will be Vimal’s sister:

There’s another Patel headed to Llanview! ONE LIFE TO LIVE has cast daytime newcomer Teresa Patel as Neela, Vimal’s baby sister, who has run away from home. “She just joined the cast of One Life To Live and you can catch her in your living rooms,” announces Patel’s Facebook page.

A model and 2010 Miss New Jersey USA contestant, Patel’s Facebook page describes her as an actress, producer, writer, entrepreneur… and pharmacist! Talk about a talented young lady! She will make her debut on Thursday, November 3.

A few Asian Americans have appeared on soaps, most notably Kelly Hu (Sunset Beach), Ming-Na Wen (As the World Turns), Lindsay Price (All My Children) and Tia Carrere (General Hospital), but no one recently or in a major role.  (These characters are recurring.)   Still, it’s a start.

Note: The last Asian character I remember on this show was hapa Blair Cramer, who was later recast with a blonde-haired, blue-eyed actress.  Hopefully nothing like that will happen here.
