I’m still in mourning over the fact that I didn’t get into the Fantastic Beasts fan event last week. And along with that, I missed out on t-shirts and wands, the ones that I would’ve gotten had I camped out overnight at Comic-Con. All I had to console myself with was tending to my Harry Potter garden in my house fashioned as Hogwarts. Needless to say, I’m a huge Harry Potter fan.

LeakyCon, a immersive experience dedicated to all things Harry Potter, comes to LA this week. Started by the beloved fan site, The Leaky Cauldron, the convention was taken over by Mischief Management, a company that organizes several fan gatherings. With the movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, coming out in weeks, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child still on best-seller lists, talk of a forthcoming New York production as well as a movie based on that play, and The Wizarding World at Universal Studios Hollywood celebrating 6 months in California, Harry Potter mania still soars strong. LeakyCon fosters that fandom.

A traveling convention, LeakyCon offers many of the same opportunities that other Cons do: Cosplay, panels exploring the minutia as well as the larger impact of the brand, photo ops, autograph and celebrity meet-and-greets, parties, outings, and meet-ups. However the programming at LeakyCon is set up much like a Hogwarts class schedule.

And at the end of each day, there’s a storytelling experience which seems to have a lot of LARP (Live Action Role Playing) and Treasure Hunting. There also is a small exhibition hall so if you’re seeking that missing card or trinket in your collection, you might find it here.

Personally, I’m scared of going to LeakyCon just as I was terrified to go to my first Comic-Con. I knew I wanted to be a part of it, and I knew I would like it. I just didn’t know how much. I will admit that I’m not much of a Cosplayer, and while you don ‘t have to dress up to attend, the whole idea of the Con is to submerse yourself into the Wizarding world. I’m not sure that I could do that. For one, I may never leave.

I heard that at the end of every night at Universal Studios, wizards link arms and sweep everyone out of the Harry Potter park. I’ve yet to see that–I’ve pretty much only gone in the daytime. At LeakyCon, that might need more than a broom and a fistful of Floo Powder to get rid of me.

LeakyCon will be held at the Burbank Marriot Convention Center which is across the street from the Burbank Airport. Tickets start at $75. October 20-23rd.

The Wizarding World portion of Universal Studios will be closed for a LeakyCon outing on Wednesday, October 19 from 7-10pm . This event is separately ticketed.
