If you scroll down the history of this blog, you’ll know that we are big fans of Teresa Huang (no, I will not use that “ly” term).

Actress, writer, and all around great person was on our first WonderCon panel. Since then, she was probably the first person to hold three TV writing “fellowships” at the same time–CBS Diversity Institute Writer’s Fellowship, CAPE Writers Fellowship, and the WGA Access Project Writing Fellowship. She currently works for a BET show as a writer’s assistant.

Several years ago, she developed the Breakthrough Brunch which brought together the many people she has reached. The purpose was to further inspire her friends and colleagues, giving her motivational panache a wider reach. Now that has shifted into the Breakthrough Reading series. Several writers will have their works read out loud by actors. Industry members will be invited to listen and to take part. The purpose is to give voice and wider reach for women and those of underrepresented communities.

The initial outing is tomorrow, February 22 at Tom Bergin’s Public House starting at 7pm.

Here’s their blurb on Facebook:

Join us for the inaugural evening of the BREAKTHROUGH READING SERIES! Supporting women and unique/diverse voices in television and film.

We’ve all attended cold reading series where the writers showcased tell stories that are limiting for women, barely touch on any minority experiences, and see the world through the lens of a white male. And that’s not to say that the writing wasn’t good. They just left out more than they included, and ESPECIALLY now, we wanted to create a forum for underrepresented voices to be heard.

Each BREAKTHROUGH night, 6 writers will be showcased. Actors and actresses in attendance will be cast by the writers on the spot to perform their scripts live for the whole group.

Directors, producers, casting directors, and other friends in the entertainment business will be invited. All of you are encouraged to invite your contacts as well. It will be a great casual environment in which to network and create relationships.

Like all grassroots movements, we can’t do this without YOU, our friends and co-collaborators. You are the wind beneath our wings, just as we hope to be the springboard for your success.

Please spread the word. We can’t wait to see you, and — we invite YOU to breakthrough!

WRITERS: If you’d like to have your original material considered for presentation, please submit up to ten pages by Wednesday, February 15. Submission form at http://bit.ly/BRseries

* $10.00 donation is suggested, but not mandatory. All are welcome! *

If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Teresa, now’s your chance. She’s an extremely talented woman who gives a lot back.
