With Wonder Woman taking an outstanding 40 million in the third weekend of the movie’s release, it may be on track to surpass Guardians of the Galaxy 2 as #2 in box office for 2017.

The movie has racked up $289 million already. While it’s doubtful that it will catch Beauty and the Beast sitting at 503 million currently, it seems to be on track to best the 376 million GOTG2 has now. After all, July 4th weekend is coming up, and the Wednesday take of nearly 4 million actually beats BATB’s track record, according to BoxOfficeMojo’s accounting. Both WW and BATB’s 20th day fell on a Wednesday, with the latter taking $3 million. And the movie still took in 100 million more.

BATB had already made $400 million at that 20th date, indicating that audiences flocked in within the first 2 weeks. In comparison, Wonder Woman has a slower build, seeming to mean that she’s got major legs to go in accumulating box office receipts.

Last Jedi will Rule

Make no doubt that both excitement and sentiment will lead audiences to the latest installation of the Star Wars saga, The Last Jedi. That movie will come in December. There’s no debate that it will soar to the top of the box office. Both Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher will appear in the sequel, and it’s Star Wars. Nuff said.

The only question is will Disney hold the top five spots in box office or will female-led movies rule 2017. Five did you say? Yes, with BATB, GOTG2, SW: Last Jedi, Thor: Ragnarok and Spider-man: Homecoming most likely to power up at the box office, Disney (with the help of Sony on Spider-man) will dominate 2017. Will Spidey break up the web of female-led movies at the top? Tom Holland is extremely likable and has been doing promotion since his appearance in Avengers: Civil War. Did you see him on Lip Synch Battle? (Holland was Billy Elliot in Billy Elliot: The Musical in London–that’s why he’s so good). Robert Downey’s appearance in the movie will undoubtedly bring in audiences. But there have been 5 recent Spider-Man movies so expect to be strong but not revolutionary as Wonder Woman.

Thor 3 focuses on a battle between Thor and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. Need I say more?

Though Gal Gadot will appear in Justice League, she’s not the lead. She’ll boost the movie’s box office, but it will probably fall short of the top 5 movies.

Here’s how I think 2017 will look like:

1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi

2. Beauty and the Beast

3. Wonder Woman

4. Spider-Man Homecoming

5. Thor: Ragnarok

6. Justice League

7. Despicable Me 3

8. Blade Runner 2049

9. Logan

10. Coco

I’m less sure about the bottom 5 but I don’t see any other movie beyond this list challenging the top 5.
